NMC ban Midwife Who Advised Pregnant Women To Perform More Oral Sex

A male midwife has been banned from the profession after it was found he had been advising women to give their partners more oral sex to reduce the risk of high blood pressure.

Ronald Lock, 48, had been telling his patients that the protein in the man's sperm would be beneficial to those suffering from hypertension.

While working at Southmead Hospital, in Bristol, Lock also allegedly referred to a patient's placenta as a 'tug rope' and told a woman in labour that taking an injection of Pethidine "feels like being p**sed."

The former midwife, from Weston-Super-Mare, also failed to keep babies warm and fed, and did not perform maternal observations for the entirety of his shifts.

The disgraced health professional lied about his wife being in recovery from surgery at nearby Frenchay Hospital so he could get time off work and change his shifts.

NMC panel chair Lesley White said: "The panel considered that these (charges) related to inappropriate and offensive comments made by Mr Lock to his patients.

"Lock's behaviour...demonstrated a total lack of regard and respect for the patients and the circumstances in which he made these comments.

"Mr Lock's actions demonstrated a complete lack of sensitivity and professionalism on his part and by doing so he breached his duty of care to those patients.

"Mr Lock misrepresented personal circumstances in order to obtain emergency leave and a different shift pattern.

"By acting dishonestly, pursued his own personal interests and demonstrated a total lack of respect for the rostering needs of his workplace and colleagues at the time."
When looking at Lock's failings to provide care to patients and babies, Ms White said:

"These included failure to carry out proper observations.

"As well as ensuring the babies were warm enough, and temperatures and blood sugar levels were correct.

"By doing so, Mr Lock failed to ensure he provided a high standard of practice at all times."
